Simply Sauer | Puppy Biting Tips

October 10, 2019

Puppy’s go through many stages but I think it is safe to say the least favorite is the biting/mouthing stage! Right now Creed is loving to bite on our shoes, ankles and legs and we are not having it haha! It is all fun and games until it actually hurts then things get real fast haha! So the other day I turned to my trusted followers to get some helpful tips and wanted to share what I learned with you all! Let’s dive into it!

First things first I think it is important to remember that this is a phase! Just like kids puppies have a phase! They will grow out of it eventually but it doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try teaching them!

Here are some of the recommendations we got: (stars are how many multiple recommendations we got)

  • When he bites shove your whole arm in his mouth so he gags

  • Walk away

  • Get him a bone something he can chew on

  • Gently knee/kick the puppy

  • Yelp loudly and act hurt *

  • Spank the dog

  • Bite his ear ***

  • Stern no and replace with toy *

  • Use a squeaky toy as a distraction

  • Yell in a deep voice

  • Timeout

  • Choke collar and give is a little tug when he bites

  • Bitter Apple Spray **

After reading all of the recommendations we decided to use biter apple spray, bite his ear, distract with a squeaky toy/chew, and timeout! Some of the other options we had tried previously and had no success like the yelping, yelling, and walking away. We felt like these were all good options that would hopefully get his attention but in a loving way (you probs think biting his ear isn’t loving but it has too many recommendations not to try haha!). In the first day we bite his ear we noticed a big change. We only had to do it a few times and when Hudson came home we saw him go for the shoes/ankles and correct himself and ended up playing with a toy instead! We also got him two new squeaking toys and if he is getting wound up we hold one and tell him to sit and then toss the toy. I only had to put him in time out one time the first day instead of 3 or 4 times the day before. The backyard is his time out we don’t use the crate because we want him to have positive vibes in there;) Lastly the biter apple spray just came in today so I haven’t had a chance to use it but we plan on spraying it on our shoes and my desk chair because he attempts to chew on that occasionally! I will have to update you on that in a few days!

This is what has worked for us so far! You got this all you puppy training friends! I hope you find one that works best for you! Leave your questions/opinions in the comments below!!
