Jasmine Star, a world-famous photographer and business consultant that I have always been inspired by, proposed these questions:
-
“Why do I want to be an associate photographer?”
-
“How long do I want to be an associate photographer?”
-
“Do I want to run my own business in the future?”
-
“Am I okay with building someone else’s business in exchange for experience?”
And questions I added to the list were,
-
Am I interested in this opportunity because I don’t have confidence in my ability to start my own business?
-
Am I okay with the possibility of not owning any of the pictures I take?
-
Why Kylee Olivia Photography?
-
Do I agree with how the business is handled and organized within someone else’s company?
Although becoming an associate photographer is a big decision, this decision was a pretty straight forward one for me. The question that made me hesitate was if I wanted to do it simply because I didn’t have confidence in myself to do it all on my own. But I decided that wasn’t my reasoning at all for wanting to do this. For as long as I have known Kylee and her photography business, I have been amazed at how she handles marketing, finances, client inquiries, working under pressure, and creativity. She is ambitious and constantly willing to learn. I have learned that I can always learn something from someone who is also constantly learning and knew this was an opportunity I shouldn’t pass up. As a full-time college student with a husband in a master’s program, I knew I needed to be a bigger support financially, but also wanted to pursue a dream of my own. I don’t know a lot about owning a business and knew Kylee could teach me a lot. I also knew I wouldn’t have a lot of time to learn on my own with other responsibilities I have with church and other jobs, so I welcomed being an associate photographer while we finish up school.
Working for Kylee Olivia Photography has been a wonderful decision and I am so excited to help her grow her business and anxious to see how she continues to find ways to grow it.
